What the Midterms Could Mean for Your Retirement Savings

Capitol At Sunset Amid Market Turbulence

The 2026 midterm elections are less than three weeks away, and they could matter more for your retirement savings than you might expect.

That’s because a big part of today’s stock market now rides on one trend: artificial intelligence.

If you have a 401(k), IRA, or index fund that tracks the S&P 500, a good share of your savings is likely tied to the same handful of tech companies.

Last week showed how quickly those stocks can move.

Many AI-related companies dropped sharply before bouncing back on Thursday.

And some Wall Street strategists say the next big swing could come from the ballot box.

Opposition to new data centers, the massive facilities that power AI, has become a campaign issue in both red and blue states.

Seven of the 10 biggest states for data-center construction elect governors next month, according to Wells Fargo.

And 22V Research expects the number of states friendly to data centers to shrink from 27 to about 15.

Some investors are already moving money out of technology stocks and into other sectors, like healthcare.

But here’s the problem: Reacting to headlines isn’t the same as having a plan.

Why retirees should pay attention

When you’re working, you have time to wait out a downturn.

In retirement, you don’t always have that luxury.

If your savings take a hit right before or while you’re drawing income, you may have to sell investments at a loss just to cover your bills.

That’s why concentration matters.

When so much of your nest egg depends on one corner of the market, a single shock, whether political, economic, or something else, can have an outsized impact on your income.

No one knows how the midterms will turn out.

The better question is whether your savings can hold up either way.

The lesson: build a retirement that doesn’t depend on one trend

Before Election Day, ask yourself:

How much of my retirement savings is tied to a handful of tech stocks?

And:

If those stocks fell sharply after the election, would I have to change how I live in retirement?

For some retirees, adding physical gold and silver, assets that don’t depend on any company’s earnings or any election result, may be worth considering as part of a broader diversification strategy.

Elections come and go. But after decades of saving, you deserve a retirement strategy that can weather whatever comes next.
