Your retirement plan may account for inflation. But is it accounting for the expenses rising fastest?
A new MarketWatch report (October 20, 2026) warns that many retirement plans rely on one average inflation rate, overlooking the expenses that could increase much faster.
With inflation at 3.7%, financial advisers say retirees may be underestimating how much they’ll need for healthcare, housing, insurance, and taxes.
Why retirees should pay attention
Imagine retiring with what you believe is enough money to last 25 years, only to discover your essential expenses are rising faster than your retirement income.
Your mortgage may be paid off, but property taxes, homeowners insurance, repairs, and medical bills don’t disappear.
Some financial advisers plan for healthcare inflation of 5% annually, compared with 3%–4% for everyday expenses.
And even when Social Security benefits increase, higher Medicare premiums can consume part of that raise.
The danger isn’t just a market crash. It’s discovering your retirement savings can no longer support the life you planned.
The lesson: Is your retirement plan underestimating inflation?
A retirement plan shouldn’t rely on a single inflation assumption.
Ask yourself:
-
Have you accounted for healthcare and housing costs rising faster than average inflation?
-
Will your retirement income keep up with your actual expenses?
-
Are your savings diversified to help manage inflation and market uncertainty?
Diversification, including physical gold and silver, may help reduce reliance on traditional financial assets, although precious metals also carry risks and do not guarantee protection against inflation.
You spent decades saving for retirement. Make sure your plan reflects what retirement could actually cost.
