44% of Retirees Depend Entirely on Social Security. Will a 3.6% Raise Be Enough?

Social Security 2027 Retirement Outlook

Millions of retirees are getting a Social Security increase in 2027. But rising healthcare costs and inflation could eat away at that extra money before they ever see it.

According to The Senior Citizens League’s 2026 Senior Survey, approximately 24.8 million older Americans (44%) rely entirely on Social Security for retirement income, up from 39% the previous year.

The newly announced 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will increase monthly benefits in 2027.

But what does that actually mean for retirees?

For someone receiving the average monthly benefit of $2,089, the increase amounts to approximately $75 more per month, bringing their benefit to roughly $2,164.

That’s about $900 more per year, before accounting for changes in Medicare premiums and other expenses.

Why retirees should pay attention

Imagine depending on a $2,089 monthly Social Security check to cover your mortgage or rent, groceries, prescriptions, utilities, and insurance.

Now imagine those expenses continuing to rise.

An extra $75 a month might help, but how far will it really go?

Medicare premiums can consume part of the annual increase before retirees receive their benefits.

And while Social Security adjusts for inflation, the formula doesn’t necessarily reflect the specific expenses older Americans face, particularly healthcare and long-term care.

There’s also a longer-term concern: Social Security’s trust funds face projected depletion without legislative changes. That doesn’t mean benefits would disappear, but it could mean reductions in scheduled benefits if Congress doesn’t act.

For retirees who depend entirely on Social Security, even a modest reduction could have serious consequences.

The lesson: Don’t assume Social Security will cover everything

Social Security provides an important foundation for retirement, but depending on it alone can leave retirees vulnerable to rising costs and unexpected expenses.

Ask yourself:

  • Will your Social Security income keep up with your actual living expenses?

  • How much of your annual increase could be consumed by Medicare and healthcare costs?

  • Do you have other savings or assets to help protect your purchasing power?

For retirees with additional savings, diversification may be worth exploring. A balanced retirement strategy can include traditional investments, cash reserves, and physical assets such as gold and silver.

Precious metals carry risks and don’t provide guaranteed income or inflation protection, but they can play a role in a broader diversification strategy.

A Social Security raise is welcome news. But protecting your retirement means looking beyond the size of your next check.
