Types of Precious Metal Coins for Your Portfolio
Like any traditional IRA, a Self-Directed IRA holding Gold or other precious metals is subject to standard IRS withdrawal rules.
Early Withdrawals (Before Age 59½)
- Withdrawing early results in a 10% IRS penalty
- You’ll also owe income tax on the amount withdrawn
- This applies regardless of whether your IRA holds stocks or physical assets
Retirement accounts are designed for long-term growth, so early withdrawals should only be considered in rare or urgent cases.
Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)
You must begin taking RMDs from your IRA by April 1 of the year after you turn:
- 73, if you reach that age after Jan. 1, 2023
- 72, if you reached that age between 2020–2022
- 70½, if you turned that age before 2020
After this initial deadline, RMDs must be taken annually by December 31.
Failing to take your RMD can result in hefty IRS penalties. IRA custodians will help you calculate the correct amount each year. As of 2023, Roth IRAs are exempt from RMDs during your lifetime, and starting in 2024, designated Roth accounts will no longer require them at all.
